Earthworks are a major element in the appearance of land as well as in the flow of rainwater in Gatineau. In addition to being aesthetic, an expert-leveled field keeps water away from a foundation wall. Whether it’s a solid paved entrance or asphalt, earthworks play a key role in the life of the pavement.
VOPAA Inc. Earthmoving expert will be able to carry out quality earthworks, whatever your project.
Earthworks: Levelling
One thing that is simple to understand is that the slope of a surface determines where the water is heading. To protect a building from stormwater,it should ideally be the highest point of your land. The concept of a positive slope refers to this situation; slopes that promote the flow of water away from a building. On the contrary, a negative slope directs the waters towards the foundation. Even if a building has a drainage system, the layout of the land is very important in order to minimize the amount of water present around the foundation.
Do not wait until you have a problem before correcting a negative slope. A foundation wall exposed to a large amount of water will degrade very quickly. A simple earthwork prevents the deterioration of a foundation. In case a foundation has infiltration problems, it is advisable torepair/seal before levelling the ground. Rehabilitation of slopes is not a quick fix, as water still seeps into the ground and rain is not the only source of water threatening soiling. Quality repair and good earthmoving work are the perfect duo to eliminate the problem. For quality work, you need a good mechanical shovel operator who is able to fine-tune the terrain. An adequate embankment should be used for optimal drainage.
Here is a landscaped land with positive slopes:
Sometimes our clients don’t have the budget for a short-term foundation repair. In this case, we recommend that the terrain be developed as a temporary solution at a lower cost, until they have the means to deal with the problem at the source. This will reduce the hydrostatic pressure on the foundation wall.
Stormwater management
When developing the slopes, we have to be careful about a very important point: rainwater cannot be directed to a neighbour’s property, that is the law. This is frequently a source of conflict between neighbours. Some do not respect this rule and it is totally illegal, because it greatly harms the neighbouring property. In case the space is limited between the two buildings, a duo of funnel-shaped slopes is set up to direct the water away from each building’s walls.
Sometimes it is impossible that the house is the highest point of a lot. In this situation, a slope can be constructed to create a funnel or a ditch is dug when there is more water coming from the high point. A ditch may look aesthetically ugly, but withrock it can instead embellish a lot.
Some clients use a landscaper to fine-tune the aesthetics after the earthworks.
Exterior Cladding Foundation
The quality of the foundation of a solid pavement surface, asphalt and other exterior finishing materials is not to be overlooked. This is directly related to the life of the coating. With Canada’s cold winters, it is essential to build a solid foundation that will not change with the freeze and thaw cycle. If there is too much movement at ground level the asphalt will easily fracture and the solid pavement will drop.
Three aspects are essential for a solid foundation.
- The type of fill equipment
- Good compaction
- Waiting
You have to dig first to make room for the granular material used as a foundation for the excavating. A foundation needs to be thick enough to be solid. Two types of granular material are used to create the base. When necessary, a geotextile membrane is installed at the very beginning.Note that a positive slope must be achieved during the design of the foundation.
Compaction
It is essential to compact the material well so that it is as stable as possible. This will allow the foundation to withstand the movements of the ground as much as the weight of vehicles for example. VOPAA Inc. has a compaction machine specially designed for this kind of work.
Waiting
Customers often want to have the final result at the end of the work, but for the exterior cladding installation it is advisable to wait 6 to 12 months after the design of the foundation. This allows time for it to stabilize naturally. During this period, the base may move and then stabilize.
